Hong Kong 4th January 1907.
Dear Mr Guterres,
I was very sorry to hear there was some talk of your resigning your post. I am sure that if such a thing did happen it would be felt very much amongst the homeward trades.
In my fourteen years, backwards and forwards to Europe, I have had to discharge and engage crews about twice a year, sometimes less than a day in the Port, and I always found you such a great help to us, and so straightforward in dealing with the Chinese and I can honestly say that I have never met a Shipping Master in any of the Ports I have been to be more just to the crews of ships when getting discharged.
Trusting that you will retain your position for many years yet.
I remain
Yours faithfully
